North Star BlueScope Steel is a 50-50 joint venture between BlueScope Steel (Melbourne, Australia) and Cargill, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN). BlueScope Steel is Australia’s largest steel producer. The company also is known worldwide for its coated and painted steel products with facilities in Australia, Asia and North America. In 2004, BlueScope Steel acquired Butler Manufacturing, the leading pre-engineered steel buildings manufacturer in the United States and China.

Cargill, Inc. is America’s largest private company, the world’s largest grain trader and food processing company.  The company has over 80,000 employees working in 65 countries throughout the world.
The partnership brings together expertise in electric furnace steel making, slab casting and hot rolling technology in a synchronous flat rolled mini-mill.  The steel mill is designed with a unique combination of proven technology to provide our customers a superior hot rolled product.

The facility was built in 1995 and 1996 with coil production beginning in March, 1997.  In a short period of time, the Employees of North Star BlueScope Steel have achieved remarkable success.  Some of the significant accomplishments include:

  • Achieving 3 years and 4 months without a Lost-Time Injury.

  • Winner of the 2004 Governors Excellence Award for Workers Compensation and Safety.

  • Ranked the #1 supplier four consecutive times by an independent survey (Jacobsen and Associates). This ranking included being #1 in Delivery Performance, Quality, Customer Service and Overall Satisfaction against all other Flat rolled steel producers in North America!

  • Production of 2 million tons of steel in a plant with a design capacity of 1.5 million tons.

  • World Class Plant-wide Attendance – The Employees have averaged over 99.30% attendance over the past 5 years. We do not know of any other production facility with this level of performance.

  • 2004 Community Service Award presented by the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA).
